私が犬島という場所に気づいたのは1999年、対岸の宝伝地区の海で撮影していた頃のことだ。偶然フィルムに映り込んでいた煙突のシルエットが犬島に渡るきっかけであった。当時は、現在のように来島者で賑やかな島ではなく、ほとんど人が訪れることのない、静かな島であった。一日中島を歩いていても、人とすれ違うことがない日もあった。廃墟となった銅精錬所跡と昔懐かしい時間が止まったような風景が、とても印象的であったことを今でも憶えている。
13年経った現在、私の視点は、煙突（銅精錬所跡）から過去の風景→集落→島民→犬島そのものへと変化している。もちろんそれには、島の人達との出会いが大きい。そして、そこで見えてくるのが、今まで気づくことができなかった風景なのだ。

I first noticed Inujima back in ’99 while filming in the Houden-area at the opposite shore. A silhouette of a chimney entered my shot by a chance, and that chance led me to Inujima. Back then, unlike today the island was not buzzing with visitors, it was a quiet, secluded place. You could walk around the island for a day and not see another soul. I still vividly remember the ruins of a copper refinery and the nostalgic sceneries, trapped in time.
13 years have passed, and my focus has shifted from the chimney (the copper refinery), to the nostalgic sceneries, to the settlement, to the inhabitants and to Inu-shima itself. Of course, meeting the islanders has played a huge part. Only then, I began to see the sceneries I have never noticed before.
