岡山県生まれの雪舟（1420～1506）とレオナルド・ダ・ビンチ（1452～1519）は、ほぼ同時代の画家である。そして、二人の共通点は、この時代の画家が描かなかった異様な風景を残していることである。
雪舟は、「秋冬山水図・冬」の中央の天から地に引かれた太い墨線とその右側の崖をイメージした細かいタテ・ヨコの線で、500年も前に抽象表現をさらりとこなしている。レオナルドは、「モナリザ」の背景に永遠に続く水の循環・悠久の時の流れを表現し、晩年には世界の終末を示す「大洪水の光景」のデッサンを大量に残している。この超現実的な二人の世界観を「山水図」として表現してみようと試みた。

Sesshu (1420 – 1506), born in Okayama, and Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) are both from the same period. They also share a uniqueness of drawing bizarre sceneries no other coetaneous artists drew.
500 years ago in the “Shuutou Sansuizu: Winter”, Sesshu effortlessly pulls off the abstract expressionist style with a strong ink line in the centre, and finer horizontal and vertical lines depicting a cliff on the right. Da Vinci expresses the everlasting flow of water and eternal stream of time in the background of the “Mona Lisa”. In his late years, there are many sketches of “Spectacle of deluge”, depicting the end of the world.
I tried to express those two artists’ surreal views on the world in my “Sansuizu”.
